Southern Exposure

Peter Goldsmid has been producing independently since 1989, when he founded Southern Exposure. Since then, it’s done single dramas, long-form drama series and documentaries, all-in-all amounting to more than 90 hours of broadcast television.

Southern Exposure’s most recent production (2025) is a compelling 9 x 46-minute True Crime series for SABC 3. David Klatzow Looking into Darkness explores GBV and femicide in this country with insight, depth and stylized recreations. See the short promo: https://vimeo.com/1053112458?share=copy

We offer:
• Production services: This is a production company, as capable of working in long form drama or documentary as providing creative, effective corporate communications. Past clients include Liberty Life, Dulux and the Alliance for Rural Democracy.
• Screenwriting services: Peter’s script for the second episode of Looking into Darkness is currently a finalist in the 2025 Writers Guild of South Africa Muse Awards for Best Documentary Script. 3 nominations and 4 wins for previous scriptwriting including SAFTA Golden Horn and Vita Awards.
• Training: Led by Margaret Goldsmid, an NFVF-approved script editor, we developed an Advanced Scriptwriting and Script Editing Course for the NFVF, while Peter has taught documentary storytelling for SAE, the NFVF and AFDA.
• Research, imagination and harnessing emotion are the key to what we do. We do it with “passion, steadfastness, constant pursuit of excellence and going the extra-extra mile.” (as one SABC Commissioning Editor put it).
• Cost-effective production from script to screen: Owning our own 4K gear – cameras, lights, mics. enables us to provide excellent value for money.

The Shooting Gallery

When we opened our doors, our vision was to create more than a production service company. We wanted to establish a mindset. A mindset that supports the creative process and finds the right creative solutions to make your budget work and your Director happy. A company with an indomitable spirit, who are always conscious that your needs are more than being met – financially, creatively & personally. In 1998 we decided to judge our performance on the basis of ‘we’re as good as our last job’. We think we got it mostly right. And that our years of experience greatly improves your experience. We’ve learned a lot, laughed a lot, sometimes we even cried, but we never lost our love for the business of making films.
