Artists ~ Mural, Graffiti & Fine Art

Byron Eksteen “Bekstie”

Byron Eksteen is a professional artist based in Cape Town that has exhibited and sold work both locally and internationally.
Beyond his career in fine arts Byron brings a decade of experience working in the film industry in the art department; working across graphic design, story boarding, props standby, art direction, fabrication. More noticeably his niche lies in creating graffiti and murals and has worked on several major productions including the latest Gore Verbinski Feature ‘Good Luck Have Fun And Don’t Die’.

Byron has the ability to work from rough concept sketches and ideas delivered by the director or PD and turn it into a what is exactly envisioned. Regarding his graffiti work ~ he is able to work in many different styles but what has been mostly in demand is his ability to work in a loose and sketchy style. Considering his experience working in the art department Byron has a very good understanding of the industry and how it works including set etiquette. Lastly Byron has on many occasions curated paintings used for film sets and has developed a signature abstract style that works perfectly for set as the work can compliment the set without screaming for attention for the camera’s eye.

Painting from a young age, I’ve always been inspired by the emotion of conceptual art and the energy of graffiti. I personally love pop art and bold colour, but I also enjoy painting finer detailed pieces and whymsical scenes. I graduated from Fashion Design College in 2007. I ran my own fashion business, often incorporating painting into my designs. I did a few Jackson Pollock inspired cocktail dresses during my early days, and sold a range of hand painted cotton dresses later on. During a stint overseas I was asked to do a classroom mural. After returning, I worked in an art classroom helping with the yearly Musical prop production painting aswell. Then, I was approached to paint a wall outside a classroom and my Mural career took off! I’ve painted scenes and props for escape rooms. I’ve done group projects on large interior walls; an inspirational 5 square meter word wall; a 4 square meter mural of a lego ball exploding through the wall; safari scenes and the list goes on!

I’m big on perfection and proficiency. The bigger and bolder the mural, the better!
